![]() Unique Hand-Crafted Dough Ornaments for All Occasions |
About Cake People Cake People are collectible creations made from a dough of flour, salt and water, often known as “Baker’s Clay”. Original, playful designs and attention to detail set these ornaments apart from others. Susan Crockett started her Cake People business in 1978, after receiving a Bachelors Degree in Fine Art from Rochester Institute of Technology, and spending a year at Oxford University in England. The popularity of her Cake People designs reflects her sense of fun and frivolity that earmark the watercolor paintings she is best known for. Cake People ornaments originate with a dough that is mixed, kneaded, rolled out and cut into shapes with a knife, (not with a cookie cutter), and then baked. Details are added to give three-dimensional features to each design; such as halos, drumsticks, antennae, slices of cake, hotdogs, or any other gee-gaws that are used to adorn the ornaments. After they’re baked, the designs are sketched with graphite and hand painted front and back with watercolors and gouache. The ornaments are given several coats of polyurethane and signed and dated. Each ornament is carefully handcrafted, resulting in little characters that have their own unique features and personalities. Cake People have been exhibited and sold at the Smithsonian’s Renwick Gallery, and exhibited at The National Museum of American History in Washington DC. These lovable creations have also been demonstrated on television for a “How-to” segment of WABC-TV’s Good Morning New York; have been commissioned for a famous New York cookie emporium, and as gifts for the cast and crew of a well known television drama series. All Cake People designs are suitable for Christmas tree adornments, and many take up residence on kitchen walls the year round. Aside from holiday tree decorations, many designs work well for Valentine keepsakes, host or hostess gifts, baby shower favors, gift box decorations, or any other celebration that may come along. Great care goes into the making of each ornament. The creative process produces endearing characters whose expressions will make you smile. Care and Storage of Ornaments Cake People are permeated and sealed with several coats of polyurethane, producing a glossy finish that strengthens the design and helps protect the ornaments from the invasive effects of moisture. It is recommended that to keep your Cake People happy, they should be stored away from heat, cold, and moisture; and therefore should never be kept in an attic or basement. Wrap them in tissue paper, laid flat, and place them in an airtight container in a closet. Cake People are carefully and lovingly made. Stored properly, they will be cherished for years to come. Because of their designs, Cake People may appear to look like candy to young children. Cake People are not edible creations. They are made from “Baker’s Clay”, and coated with polyurethane. Contact your physician immediatiately if accidentally ingested. About The Company Their popularity reflects her sense of fun and frivolity that earmark the watercolor paintings she is best known for.
